Feral hogs by state

Where wild hogs live in the US, what each state allows for hunting and trapping, and how to get wild boar meat delivered.

By Updated

Feral hogs — wild pigs descended from escaped domestic swine and imported Eurasian wild boar — are established in more than 30 states, with the largest populations across the South from Texas to Florida. USDA puts the national population at 6 to 9 million animals and the damage they cause at a minimum of $2.5 billion a year (AP, 2022; USDA APHIS).

Rules differ sharply between states. Some, like Texas, let landowners and hunters take hogs year-round with few restrictions; others ban hog hunting entirely so that hunters do not scatter sounders ahead of trapping crews, and treat any sighting as something to report. Pick your state:

Alabama Feral hogs live in all 67 Alabama counties. Daytime hog hunting has no closed season and no bag limit, night hunting needs a special nighttime license, and moving or releasing a live hog is illegal. AL · delivery 2–3 days by ground; 2-day air recommended (estimate)Read → Arizona Arizona has only small, scattered feral hog populations, and state and federal agencies are working to eliminate them. The wild pig most Arizonans see is actually the javelina, a native peccary and big-game animal that isn't a pig at all. AZ · delivery 2–3 days by ground (estimate)Read → Arkansas Arkansas lets landowners, and anyone they give permission, kill or trap feral hogs year-round on private land. On wildlife management areas, hog hunting is sharply limited while a statewide task force works to eradicate them. AR · delivery 1–2 days by ground (estimate)Read → California Wild pigs live in 56 of California's 58 counties. As of 2026 you can hunt them year-round with no bag limit, but you need a hunting license plus an annual wild pig validation, and nonlead ammunition. CA · delivery 3–4 days by ground; 2-day air recommended (estimate)Read → Florida Florida has wild hogs in all 67 counties, and on private land you can hunt or trap them year-round, day or night, with the landowner's permission and no hunting license. FL · delivery 3–4 days by ground; 2-day air recommended (estimate)Read → Georgia Georgia's feral hogs, roughly 600,000 of them by recent estimates, live in all 159 counties. You can hunt them year-round with no bag limit, and a 2026 law made trapping and drone scouting easier on private land. GA · delivery 3 days by ground; 2-day air recommended (estimate)Read → Hawaii Feral pigs live on Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, Molokaʻi, Oʻahu and Kauaʻi, and they're a legal game mammal. You need a Hawaii hunting license and a Wildlife Conservation Stamp to hunt them, on public hunting units or on private land with permission. HI · delivery 2–3 business days by air only (estimate)Read → Louisiana Louisiana has feral hogs in all 64 parishes, an estimated 700,000 to 900,000 of them. They're classed as outlaw quadrupeds, so licensed hunters can take them year-round, and landowners can authorize night hunting on private property. LA · delivery 1–2 days by ground (estimate)Read → Michigan Yes, there are wild boar in Michigan, but not many, and the state wants none. Russian boar and their hybrids are a prohibited invasive species. Licensed hunters may shoot them on public land, and landowners may shoot them on their own property. MI · delivery 3–4 days by ground; 2-day air recommended (estimate)Read → Missouri Missouri is trying to eliminate feral hogs, not manage them for hunting. Taking hogs is prohibited on all MDC land and hog hunting is closed in the Mark Twain National Forest, and the state asks people to report hogs rather than shoot them. MO · delivery 2 days by ground (estimate)Read → North Carolina Feral swine live in scattered pockets across North Carolina. You can hunt them year-round on private land, at night too, with no bag limit, as long as you hold a hunting license or are license-exempt. NC · delivery 3–4 days by ground; 2-day air recommended (estimate)Read → Oklahoma Oklahoma has an estimated 600,000 to 1.5 million feral hogs, detected in 70 of its 77 counties. On private land you can hunt them year-round in daylight, usually without a hunting license, and landowners can register a night-shooting exemption. OK · delivery 1–2 days by ground (estimate)Read → South Carolina Wild hogs have been documented in all 46 South Carolina counties since 2008. With a hunting license you can hunt them on private land in daylight with no closed season or bag limit, and at night only on property registered with SCDNR. SC · delivery 3–4 days by ground; 2-day air recommended (estimate)Read → Tennessee Tennessee treats wild hogs as a destructive nuisance species, not game. Landowners can kill hogs year-round on their own land and name up to 10 helpers, but public-land hog hunting is limited and possessing or moving live hogs is illegal. TN · delivery 2–3 days by ground (estimate)Read → Texas Texas has more wild hogs than any other state, an estimated 3 million or more in 250 of its 254 counties, and you can hunt or trap them year-round on private land with the landowner's consent and no hunting license. TX · delivery 1–2 days by ground (estimate)Read →
